Newton catches best of British Couch’s sea bream

IT WAS inevitable that the Couch’s sea bream Bailiwick and British shore-caught records would be beaten. Increasing numbers over 3-0-0 are being reported from boat anglers.

It was only a matter of time before specimens heavier than the current record of 2-15-1 caught by Lynton Carre in August 2006 would come inshore into the range of the shore angler.

Well it has happened.

Simon Newton was legering a lugworm/squid cocktail bait on a benchmark in Belle Greve Bay when he hooked and landed a 3-4-6 specimen.Formalities to submit claims for both the national and Bailiwick shore records are already in hand.

It is highly probably that Newton’s potential record fish will be beaten in the near future, for the size of the Couch’s sea bream is steadily increasing.

A good example of their potential is the 6-9-7 boat-caught specimen landed by Raymond Fallaize in April last year. In addition Richard Lord has confirmed that specimens in excess of 10-0-0 have been recorded in other places.

It is even possible that Fallaize’s record could be challenged in the future.

Newton has entered his catch in the July Fish of the Month competition.

JOE GOMEZ has won the Guernsey Sea Anglers Club’s latest boat competition.

It was a three-hour evening event, the first leg in the two-match Clark Cup series.

His winning bag was 20 pollack and one whiting for 34-3-0 and 202.75 points.

The event attracted 25 members, who all found fish. They were taken to marks in the Big Russel, including the Fourquies and the Lower Heads area, where they caught 221 pollack, 20 mackerel, five pout, four ballan wrasse, 11 cuckoo wrasse, 10 black bream, one red gurnard, one cod and one whiting.

The competition kitty is awarded for the heaviest fish on each boat.

John Davey had the heaviest fish of the evening: fishing on Out the Blue he boated a 10-15-5 pollack. He also won the Highland Laddie Cup, which is awarded each year to the biggest fish in this particular competition.

On Discovery the kitty went to Martin Crittell for a 5-8-0 pollack, while the money on Margaret K went to Stuart Tostevin for a 4-2-0 pollack.

Other notable fish were a 5-4-0 ballan wrasse by Alex Fisher and a 1-15-7 pout by Lee Vaudin.

The second leg in the Clark series is a shore event on 9 November.

After two boat competitions Vaudin has taken the lead in the overall and boat championship lists. He has 472.25 points, 56.25 ahead of second placed Alex Fisher.

The Great Bank proved to be a productive mark when the club juniors fished the third leg in the four-match Roger Cup series. Only six youngsters turned out, but between them they boated 74 mackerel, 48 whiting, two bass and two pollack.

The winner, Yusuf Ikirmawi, caught 20 mackerel and eight whiting for 18-0-0 and 240 points.

His victory was a narrow one for Cyle Hooper was only two points behind. His catch was 12 mackerel, eight whiting and a bass for 17-8-0.

Third was Lyndon Le Billon who had 13 mackerel, eight whiting and a bass for 17-8-0 and 226 points.

Samuel Luke Teed was fourth with one pollack, 12 mackerel and nine whiting for 16-0-0 and 193 points.

Fifth place went to Marcus Crittell who had one pollack, eight mackerel and nine whiting for 13-2-0 and 157.5 points.

Harry Remfrey in sixth place completed the catches with nine mackerel and three whiting for 9-0-0 and 108 points.

DAVID DRUCE has made an unusual catch, a brace of undulate ray.

He was out with Richard Seager on Out the Blue at Banc au Nord when he boated specimens of 14-11-4 and 12-8-15 on his legered sandeel.

The larger fish has become an entry in the July Fish of the Month competition, in which it will be judged against the 19-6-13 Bailiwick boat record.

Nick Luscombe also made a rare catch. He landed a cuckoo wrasse from a shore mark. He was fishing from St Peter Port breakwater when his legered verm was taken by a 1-0-1 fish. It has also been entered in the FOM where it will be assessed against the 1-12-9 shore record.

Junior angler Marc Mourant has entered a shore-caught mackerel, hoping to win the Aval du Creux Hotel prize for youngsters. He flat-fished a sandeel bait on St Peter Port breakwater and landed a 1-3-14 fish, which will be judged against the 2-13-0 shore best.

A free-lined sandeel presented on a west-coast shore mark proved a successful method for Jason Piriou as he caught a 11-3-2 bass, which was his personal best.

It will be assessed against the 18-6-5 Bailiwick shore record. It has also become an entry in the Phoenix Fish Bass competition.

Another junior angler hoping to get on the prize list is Luke Webb. He legered a sandeel on Banc au Nord and boated a 4-7-9 brill, which will be judged against the 13-9-0 Bailiwick boat record
