PUPILS from Vauvert Primary School have joined the island’s Britain in Bloom efforts by decorating brown paper bags for a colouring competition.

The bags will be used by any hotel guests who wish to volunteer their time by dead-heading in the hotel gardens and surrounding areas.

The competition was organised by Herm Britain in Bloom Committee member Lesley Bailey and was judged by guest Susan Diamond, an artist from Herefordshire.

‘I was looking mainly for pictures that covered the whole of the bag and were very bright,’ said Mrs Diamond, who has been visiting the island with her husband since 1986.

She specialises in painting the natural world and has spent many hours capturing the beautiful Herm scenery in watercolours.

‘I chose the winning entries because they were the most eye-catching in their colours and very detailed,’ she explained.

The winners were announced at a special prize-giving evening at Vauvert School. The entries were in three categories – Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Herm children were also given the opportunity to take part.

Winners were: Reception – 1, Leya Batchelor, 2, Caitlin Morgan, 3, Elsie Lister. KS1 – 1, Leah Taylor, 2, Tiegan Thornborrow, 3, Willow Bearder; KS2 – 1, Caius Bearder, 2, Sarah Hamilton, 3, Sophie Penney.

People may notice around the island various hand-coloured notices about its Britain in Bloom involvement. These were also distributed by Lesley and were designed by the Herm children.
