Big name to live up to but carnival does not disappoint

THE new Town Carnival could be all change again next year as organisers reconsider the event’s title. La Fete de Musique a la Ville was the new name for this year’s event but organisers are considering whether to keep the long title.

‘We will need to think about the name,’ said organiser Deputy Jack Honeybill. ‘We are considering returning to just the Town Carnival and dropping the “new” part.’

Regardless of the name, the event, which has been running all week, has proved popular.

‘This year has been a huge success,’ said Deputy Honeybill. ‘It’s hard to judge how many people have watched events because people are constantly walking through. Everyone has had their favourite acts. It’s just nice to see people enjoying the music.’

Deputy Honeybill said the carnival had created a nice atmosphere in Town.

‘This has made St Peter Port feel very cosmopolitan. Acts that have come over have commented that the island has felt like a big family.’

Acts over the week have varied from clowns Sonny and Rainbow to opera singers Jack Day and Imogen Roose.

‘I’ve loved all of them, but my favourite act was the opera singers. I saw them 12 months ago in Covent Garden and they were great, so to get them here has been wonderful.

‘I saw Jack Day go up to a couple and their baby and begin singing a love song to the lady. He then walked her away arm in arm, singing to her. Her husband then came over and rescued her and carried her away. It was very romantic.

‘The singers had never been to Guernsey but they have enjoyed it.’

Plans for next year’s carnival are already being considered.

‘I’ve already had one lady come up to me and ask when next year’s carnival is so she can plan her holiday around it. We hope to start fund-raising soon so we can get such good acts again next year.’

The carnival is still on today and finishes tonight with a Prom-style concert in the James Saumarez Hall in the Markets.
