STEVE DAWES has won the opening two races of the week-long All Terrain Challenge. He goes into this evening’s third stage, the lung-busting Telegraph Bay hill climb at Jerbourg, leading his nearest rival by more than two-and-a-half minutes.

After a straightforward win in the opening race at Pleinmont, he pulled out nearly two minutes over the 8km cliff path run at Icart.

Over a course which is probably the toughest of the week and includes two giant climbs from Moulin Huet to Bon Port and from Saints Harbour to Icart, a total of 600 steps, his strength and fitness really showed as he powered to victory.

Behind him a close race for the minor honours saw Mercier again finish second but by just six seconds from former Challenge winner Dave Dyke, who found the course much to his liking.

There were also good runs from Sylvans footballer Tristan Robilliard, who lies sixth, young Ben Wilen in seventh and island bowler, Ian Merrien.

Martine Scholes continues her domination of the women’s event, finishing eighth overall and and three-and-a-half minutes ahead of Sarah Mercier.

Gail Merrien is the third placed woman.

Adam Dorey had another consistent run and leads Division Two, while Gordon Mercier heads Three and newcomer Tina Coutanche, Four.

This evening’s event starts at 6.30pm.
