FIONA ARGENT has just come back from the European Veterans Athletics Championships with bronze in the heptathlon.
Held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the local athlete (pictured) was taking part in the 50 years old to 54 women’s category for the multi-event discipline.
It was the first time that she has competed in the heptathlon. As a runner, Argent in the past has won gold at the British and Irish National Masters Championships.
‘I’m absolutely delighted considering it was my first heptathlon,’ she said. ‘I feel very pleased and it was obviously a good decision to have moved to multi events. It was a leap into the unknown. It all went very well, apart from the long jump.’
In the first event, the 80m hurdles, Argent came third in a time of 15.99sec.
Argent then set 1.21m in the high jump which was an improvement on her personal best by 10cm.
She proceeded to break her personal best in the shot putt as well when she threw 6.74 that smashed her old record by 40cm.
She then went onto claim the 200m in a time of 31.48.
Her performances throughout the day saw her in second place overnight.
Sadly for her, however, she had very bad start the next day in the long jump.
She faulted in the first two of three jumps.
For the third she landed 3.38 to come last.
She had been hoping to do 3.70.
‘It was a disaster,’ she said.
‘[In the last jump] I had to make sure I was º so I was miles behind the board.’
Argent had a better showing in the following event, the javelin, when when she threw 15.05 to come third.
But it was her final performance in the 800m that secured her the bronze when she came second in a time of 2.58.14.
Argent had a total score of 3,726.
Gold medallist Sigrid Schwarz of Germany came home with 3,992 points.
Next on the agenda for Argent is the British Masters Heptathlon Championships in Oxford in September.
At the championships she is set to come up against Caroline Marler who is the widow of Guernsey athletics legend, Keith Falla.
