Queru defends title in prestigious event

0093236.jpgBRIAN QUERU will tee up as defending champion in Saturday’s Investec L’Ancresse Open.

The most prestigious event in the LGC calendar is once again full to its capacity of 170, with many low-handicappers from around the Channel Islands and the UK among the field.

Queru (pictured) endured a nervous wait last year as long-time leader in the clubhouse with a net 65, but his fine round was not to be beaten.

In the scratch trophy, holder Bobby Eggo is once again the man to beat. He has claimed the trophy no fewer than 12 times, five of those occasions coming in the last six years. In 2007 he carded a two-under-par 68.

The weekend starts tomorrow with the Investec Team Golf competition, which will see 200 golfers playing in four-balls.

‘Once again the weekend is fully booked and we have a large reserve list for both days,’ said L’Ancresse GC’s competition chairman Andy Walden.

‘Given good weather, we are expecting an excellent weekend of golf.

‘The team event on Friday is always well supported and competitive, but Saturday is when the individual titles will be decided.

‘For many players, this is the highlight of their golfing year.’

Tomorrow’s tee times begin at 8am with the last group out at 4pm.

The first pair in Saturday’s open tee off at 7.30am, with the last two out nine hours later.

Tomorrow’s event will have a minimum of 10 prizes while, on Saturday, the top 12 net scores, top five scratch and best two veterans will be rewarded.

On both days there are nearest-the-pin prizes on all four par threes plus a special prize for any hole-in-one.
