BELS may have set a precedent as being the first club to advertise for a paid development officer.
As part of their newly-acquired FA Charter Status Accreditation, the champions of the last Priaulx League, have put an advert in the Guernsey Press for someone to run their juniors and minis section, which has around 100 young players.
There is a possibility that other clubs will follow suit as development is becoming more crucial as other sports in the island are eating into the number of children who play the sport which traditionally has always been its most popular.
Bels president Hilary Sarre has been fulfilling the role, but he is finding it increasingly difficult to give it his full attention.
There have been a couple of candidates.
‘The most important job in the club is the development,’ Sarre said.
‘We know we’ve got a good set-up down there, but the juniors and minis aren’t as strong as they used to be.’
Candidates are required to have at least a level one FA coaching qualification.
Apart from on-pitch skills, successful candidates are required to have IT skills and will be expected to go into schools and promote the sport.
Bels’ traditional catchment area is St Peter Port, which contains Vauvert and Amherst Primary schools.
Sarre pointed out that the closure of St Peter Port Secondary meant that all its pupils would go to the new school at Les Nicolles and the club would lose a big feeder.
He sees the position as a part-time one with around 10 hours of work a week.
He declined to say how much the job pays, saying that it is more of an honorary position.
‘It’s not a living wage,’ he said.
