MORE than 1,000 people have pledged their support for Pembroke Bay kiosk.
The States has given owners Gary and Lynn de Carteret notice to quit in a long-running dispute over lease agreements.
About 200 people have signed a petition which the couple started at the kiosk on Saturday and two pages – Save Pembroke Bay Kiosk and Save Pembroke Bay Slipway Kiosk – on social networking website Facebook have attracted 800 members.
‘We have had a phenomenal response and people were literally coming from all over the island to sign the petition and they are very much in support of us,’ said Mrs de Carteret.
‘We opened on Sunday in the pouring rain and while we did not have many customers, people still came to sign our petition. We continue to fight on and it strengthens our belief that a great deal of the public are behind us.’
Treasury minister Charles Parkinson said he had requested case details from staff at States Property Services. ‘I have asked my staff for a brief because the decision to evict the tenants predates my time on the department,’ he said.
Deputy Parkinson said he expected to receive the information within 48 hours.
The de Carterets are defying an order from the Law Officers not to open the kiosk. They have been told that any receipts will be taken as damages in view of their ‘unlawful entry onto the land’.

Andrew and Elizabeth said they had been regular visitors to the island in the last 25 years.
‘We always make sure that we visit the kiosk because of the high quality of food and the very friendly service,’ they said.
Jackie said she was tired of the way that the States was acting. ‘Guernsey is changing for the worse and we don’t seem to let people get on with their lives,’ she said.
Peter had similar views.
‘It is unbelievable that the States should take such a high-handed attitude over this local family-run business that has been operating for so many years without a problem.’

Are the States of Guernsey trying to destroy the tourism industry in this island or what?
First they allow raw sewage to be pumped into the sea then they get ‘heavy’ with a local kiosk that is a boon to tourists in the summer!!
Wake up States members the Finance industry isn’t the be all and end all of Guernsey economy!!
I just want to register my vote in favour of the de Carterets. How on earth a body (who exactly are they i.e. their actual names!) can spend the time and resources on hounding, harassing, hassling in this manner is absolutely ludicrous! Shouldn’t be surprised though, as having lived in Guernsey all my life - 51 year’s worth - I’m still totally bemused by the infrastructure that governs this island. It seems like every day I hear of something mind boggling that our government gets up to, supposedly to our benefit. Who do they think they’re kidding? Not me, that’s for sure.
The States will not be completely happy until all traces of the Guernsey way of life have been replaced by the wants of non-Islanders who wish to come here to ‘get away from the rat race’ then demand, and get, things here changed to be exactly what they have left behind! If this kiosk was owned by a consortium, this would never have arisen and thats faw sure! We probably wont need beach kiosks soon as no one will want to go to the sewage covered beaches anyway. A sewage issue like this will destroy what little tourism we have left. Get your priorities right, let Guernsey be Guernsey!
