JAMES BRIGGS has had a solid start to his European campaign.
The 33-year-old Sarnian, who won gold in the sailboarding event at the 2005 NatWest Island Games in Shetland, is spending the next few weeks in Europe competing in three top Formula Windsurfing races.
They feature the best in the continent.
His first stop was the recent Formula Euro Challenger in Pobierowo on Poland’s Baltic coast.
Over three days of competition held in 20 to 30 knots of wind, Briggs came 36th out of the 60 competitors in the men’s fleet.
‘We managed 11 races over the three days in what I found were pretty challenging sea conditions,’ he said.
‘There was a really short swell and there were occasional waves breaking on the course which were head high, making staying on the water while going upwind rather challenging. The shore break was also pretty fierce and you needed to time your entry or exit from the water to make sure that you did not get into trouble.’
Briggs is now in action along the coast from Pobierowo at Leba for the Formula European Championships.
He is then off to Switzerland for the Windsurfing Euro-Cup over the weekend of 14 to 17 August at Silvaplana in the south-east of the country.
