THE Harbour Carnival must happen, according to its organisers.
Guernsey Round Table president Stuart Moseley said too many people and a worthy charity would be let down if it was cancelled.
It has been put on hold because of the sewage leak and a new date has yet to be set.
‘Not only will the participants and people who enjoy coming to watch be let down, so will this year’s project, the St Peter Port Centre for Young People,’ he said.
‘We are looking at the end of August or the start of September as the new date.’
The carnival committee had a meeting on Monday evening and decided to follow advice from Environmental Health to postpone the event.
‘Competitors would have been going in and out of the harbour all night and it would not be responsible for us to allow that if there are health and safety concerns,’ said Mr Moseley.
He said he had been in contact with the police, the constables and the harbour master who would all be happy if the event were rescheduled.
‘We have to make sure nothing else is on in Town on that day and that tides are ideal.’
He described organising and getting permission for the event as a mammoth task.
The Round Table hopes to raise between £10,000 and £15,000 from the carnival.
‘Let’s just hope the Belle Greve sewage pipe is fixed soon,’ he said.
‘The Harbour Carnival is a really fun event and a great Guernsey evening out.’
Wayne Bulpitt, director of Guernsey Youth LBG, said it would be very grateful for the funds to go towards the centre, which is being built in the former Caves de Bordeaux pub in Town.
‘If the carnival doesn’t happen, it will leave a hole in our funds,’ he said.
