GUERNSEY under-15s today have the chance to secure third place in European Division One.
The Sarnians yesterday made it a three age-group hat-trick over Denmark this season with a 39-run victory at Victoria College to finish second in their group behind champions and favourites Ireland.
Now the Netherlands, who were 89-run winners over Jersey yesterday, are between Guernsey and a top-three finish.
‘We are guaranteed third or fourth, we just want to make sure it is third now,’ said Guernsey under-15s coach Jeremy Frith.
‘Holland are a decent side, but if we perform as we did again Ireland [on Tuesday], we have certainly got a chance.
‘Being in that [third-fourth] play-off is an accurate reflection of where we are. We potentially could be up with Ireland and Scotland, but we have got a lot of work to do to get up to that level.’
Adam Clark shone with the bat for Guernsey yesterday, making an excellent 81 out of 192 all out.
Useful contributions also came from Tom Still and CJ Peatfield.
‘Clarky was the star. He batted really well,’ Frith said.
‘We had had a long chat with him before the island game, saying that although he has always been capable, it was time he knuckled down, took responsibility and got some runs. To his credit he has taken that on board.
‘The Irish thought he was one of the best players they have seen in the tournament and he backed that up with another good innings today.’
In reply, Denmark were bowled out for 153 with Dane Mullen claiming outstanding figures of four for 22.
‘Dane bowled intelligently, mixed it up and finished the job off well,’ said Frith.
‘Tom Still also bowled nicely and Glenn Le Tissier has bowled really well this week so far.’
The coach described the overall team performance as ‘solid’.
‘We were not as good in our disciplines as we were against the Irish and that is probably down to tiredness and motivation.
‘The boys were hugely motivated against Ireland because they have been the best in this age group for eight or nine years.
‘Today [against Denmark] they knew they had to win and they got the job done without quite reaching the same levels.
