ANDY PRIAULX was given a hero’s welcome at his book signing on Saturday.
The three-times World Touring Car champion was greeted by a queue of people eager for him to sign his autobiography. The 400 copies in stock at the Press Shop in Smith Street sold out within two hours.
Mr Priaulx said he was honoured that so many people had made the effort to come out.
‘It’s been really nice and been a great response. It’s been an enjoyable day.
‘There’s been people from all walks of life, all age groups. I get something every time I come to do one of these.
‘I’m really proud to see so many people. It’s really humbling.’
He said that he felt it was the right time to write a book about his life, as he was the only driver to become a three-time world champion in consecutive years.
‘I would like people to be inspired by the book. It’s a really honest story of the process in becoming what I am today. I believe that it’s a good reflection of my life.
‘Once we were in Ottakers book shop. At the time we were really in trouble and I said to Jo, “One day I will have my book in this shop”. It was nice to go back there and do a signing.’
Mr Priaulx said that he believed it was a happy book and that there was a lot about Guernsey and he hoped that people who read it could relate to parts of the island.
Roy Smyth, 52, who was on holiday from Ireland, said he was a big fan of Mr Priaulx and had been following him since he was competing in national hill climbs.
‘I saw Andy at the Craigantlet hill climb and when he was in the UK championship.
‘I’ve watched him progress in the touring cars over the past few years. It’s great to see somebody who started with absolutely nothing proving that he has the talent. This is a nice opportunity to meet him.’
Calum Allen had come with his mother, Steph, and younger brother Alex, four.
‘I think it’s really exciting as Andy Priaulx is a really good driver,’ said the six-year-old.
‘I look up to him and see him as a good role model. He has shown me that if he can do it, anyone can.’
