No bail for new dad after CS spray case

0521120.jpgNEW dad Samuel Bishop, 19, will spend the next three-and-a-half weeks away from his partner and days-old baby daughter.

And their separation might last a lot longer after police had to use CS spray on Bishop and on his father, Christopher, 40, during an incident at the Weighbridge taxi rank early on Sunday.

Officers arrived to find the pair arguing with three other men. Bishop senior was bare-chested and aggressive.

When an officer approached, Bishop senior swore. Friends tried to move him but after a few steps, he turned and swore again.

His son then walked up to the officer, turned him to face him and asked what he was doing.

Another officer stood between Bishop junior and the officer and the teenager swore aggressively.

Then, without warning, he headbutted Sgt Colin Solway, splitting his lip, and struggled as police put him under arrest. His father returned, began to shout and swear and pushed an officer.

Bishop junior, of Flat 2, 45, Longstore, admitted disorderly behaviour and assaulting and resisting police. Bishop senior, of Trafford House, Les Croutes, St Peter Port, admitted disorderly behaviour and obstructing police.

Advocate Paul Lockwood said that the younger accused had become a father in the last two weeks and wanted to spend time with his partner and baby daughter before the almost inevitable term of youth detention, but the bail application was refused and the accused, who had a bad record, was remanded in custody until sentencing on 11 September.

His father had not been in trouble since 2000 and was bailed on condition that he does not drink and takes a breath test if required.

Superintendent Ian Morellec said that despite bruising and swelling to his cheek in addition to his cut lip, Sgt Solway had been passed fit to continue on duty.

Despite two weekend incidents, assaults on police had significantly fallen over the past two years.

‘A number of factors have brought about this positive outcome, not least of which is on-going training in conflict resolution.’
