HD Ferries. (0558805)
DIRECT sailings to St Malo with HD Ferries have been cancelled because of rising fuel costs, passengers claimed yesterday.
A number of travellers contacted the Guernsey Press yesterday shocked at the operator’s sudden decision to remove direct services from Guernsey to St Malo from 1 September.
Passengers booked on sailings after that date have been contacted by the company to inform them of the cancellations.
The move follows a number of recent cancellations of sailings by the company.
One passenger affected told the Guernsey Press: ‘The way HD Ferries drops sailings when it suits them just damages passenger confidence in their ability to operate a scheduled service. It’s like they’ve got a death wish or something.’
HD Ferries was unavailable for comment.

recently i had a terrible time with h.d., which the gsy.press decided not to follow up.i will comment no more than to say that h.d. cost me money, thank god that Condors future seems secure, yes perhaps alittle more cost, but reliable and polite staff make it worthwhile
Yes, thank God for Condor Ferries. HD were never going to be able to compete with a company like Condor. They (HD) should consider axing all their services - full stop !!
Keep up the good work Condor.
Do some people really believe that Condor is God’s chosen supplier of ferries to Guernsey and that He has something against HD? Is Condor’s favoured position really the result of divine intervention?
no,not devine intervention, just good service and good staff.
It was you, Laurie, (and , you, John) that said “thank god”. Either you believe that god is favouring one provider over the other or you don’t. For what it’s worth, I don’t believe god has the slightest interest in the viability of the ferry operators.
Ted,
Have they got internet access at the Day Centre now ?
How fab !!
Ted.
Once again your missing the point. Common sense would say that ‘thank God’ or any other phrase of this nature would be classed as a figure of speech!!!!
As for H.D. well, great shame. I’m sure many will sympathise with all the problems of the past but unfortunately they have shot themselves well and truely in the foot! Booking with them has become more of a gamble than a guarantee! If you can’t provide a regular service, you will not survive. The competition is needed but this has now turned into a one sided race. Should this change dramatically I can imagine everyone shouting ‘thank god’ from the decks!!
Some might be offended at the use of phrases like “thank god” as a figure of speech. Laurie and John have not claimed to be using it in this way.
Emeraude Ferries provided a much better service than Condor or HD Ferries. Unfortunately
now that they are not operating the fares increased because Condor has no real competition - anyone needing a reliable service cannot bank on HD sailing.
The only thing in Condor’s favour is that the ships are more stable. On recent trip on the HD 1
rolled like a pig in a very slight swell. Persumably this is the reason they abandon sailings at the slightest sign of less than ideal weather
