GUERNSEY juniors are itching to get out on the L’Ancresse links this weekend and attempt to overturn inter-insular favourites Jersey.
Although the Sarnians have not won the trophy in more than a decade, there is a positive vibe around the club at the moment thanks to some excellent individual results and a second straight season as the top Guernsey outfit in the Hampshire Sevens.
President Colin ‘Bill’ Le Huray felt that there has been a buzz within his squad in the build-up to the clash.
‘I have got the impression that they are really up for it and want it to happen as soon as possible,’ he said.
‘They have shown this season that they can play very good golf.
‘They have got to do it over 54 holes this weekend and I do not see why they can’t if they are positive about it.
‘For some of these kids it might be the one and only time they play for their island against Jersey and they all need to give it 100%.’
Le Huray admitted that the visitors will start as favourites, but he remains optimistic that his team, which includes two debutants in Tom Pattimore and Luke Blondel, can match up to them.
‘Handicap-wise, we are closer to them than we have been in years.
‘They have got some very experienced players with four or five years of playing at inter-insular level under their belt.
‘If you look at our team, there is not a great deal of experience there, but they have all done very well this season.’
They are also a close-knit group who practise and play together and who all get on very well.
They have also shown admirable fighting qualities in match-play situations this summer.
‘I have got 10 battlers who have got some fight and determination in them,’ Le Huray said.
‘We have learnt a lot from last season [when Guernsey lost 16-1 at La Moye]. It was a heavy defeat, but actually from tee to green we matched them, it was only our short game that let us down and we have worked really hard on that this year.
‘We will have to see whether it stands up to an inter-insular, but the boys are very excited and are raring to give it a go.’
