TODAY’S cricket match between Guernsey and Jersey is without doubt the biggest in the two islands’ history.
It also represents the climax of the ICC European Division Two Championships, which has been held on the island this week.
Going into yesterday’s matches both old rivals were level at the top of the table on six points and the only two teams still capable of winning the championship.
Today’s match will determine who is crowned Division Two champions. They will then meet Norway, who finished bottom of Division One, in a playoff, possibly in September 2009, for a chance to join the top European division that features countries such as Scotland, Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Today’s match will also help determine as to which World Cricket League division Guernsey will go into when it expands next year.
‘It’s the most important [match we’ve ever played] without a doubt,’ said the chairman of the Guernsey Cricket Board, Dave Piesing.
The match gets under way at 11am and spectators are requested not to park their cars at the ground.
