Flying start to marriage

MARRIED life took off early for two newlyweds yesterday.
When Wayne and Nicky Branquet came out of St Peter’s Church after the service they found friends had organised an aircraft fuselage to take them to their reception.
‘I knew something would happen, that maybe there would be a dinghy or something, but I didn’t expect this,’ said Mrs Branquet, nee Dyke, 34.
The couple are part of a western parishes group known as the Mentals who focus much of their activity on the L’Eree Hotel bar. One of the group, Mad Cow, said that he and Shane, brother of the bridegroom, had come up with the idea.
‘As the evening went on, we kept coming up with ideas,’ he said.
The fuselage was complete with a spinning propeller, a flashing light on the back, a bucket of champagne on ice and a bouquet of red roses.
What had been a bare shell was fitted out with car seats and a toy steering wheel for the bridegroom, 37, who works in operations at Guernsey Airport.
The friends are not saying where the fuselage came from but Mad Cow said it would be returned to its rightful owner.
It carried the registration N-CSAC, reflecting the bride’s Christian name and her husband’s nickname, Sack.
It was unable to take off as a tractor towed it down Rue de l’Eglise, possibly because of all the beer cans trailing behind.

At other weddings, group members have formed a guard of honour with oars while wearing wellington boots, bow ties and fishing aprons. Another couple found a small fishing boat waiting to take them from the church.
