Shorto starts with tough tie

ISLAND champion Adam Shorto will kick off the start of a new snooker season with an early tester in defence of his title.
The number one seed plays Stan Lester on Monday night at the Gremlin, while Martyn Desperques travels to the North Social to play Craig de Carteret.
The preliminary round of the Island Snooker Championship has thrown up three more all-Premier clashes with Shaun Mahy playing Rick de Garis and newly promoted North Social L-Plates duo Darren Hughes and Milford de Carteret also meeting.
Renowned pool player Jess de la Haye has signed up for Premier team La Villette Gremlins in his debut snooker season and while his league appearances may be few, an intriguing match against teammate Dave Bullock is one to look forward to.
A bumper entry in the Norman Wale Snooker Handicap means that Graham Peel will have to win seven matches to retain his title, starting off with a home tie against John Carre.
The pick of the matches, though, sees Glenn Le Prevost take on John Skillett, while Desperques will, as last season, face a first match deficit of 66 points in order to overcome Dario Mella.
In the team snooker straight knockout, the finalists of the past two seasons will face each other in the preliminary round.
La Villette Gremlins (playing then as Gremlin X) and Gremlin Galacticos have shared the spoils for the past two years, but this time they face each other for a quarter-final spot against either Sarnian Fast Movers or North Social Northern Boys.
La Villette Gremlins also face Premier opposition in the team handicap when they play Ex-Service Winkers.
