Show some common sense, grower tells Environment

A VINERY owner who is finding it nearly impossible to exit his property in Duveaux Road has called on the Environment Department to show more common sense and install warning signs.
Nigel Batiste says the new one-way system has made it even more dangerous for anyone leaving the site because traffic was now ‘hugging the wall’.
Mr Batiste fears large vehicles may be forced onto the new pavement, endangering pedestrians and cyclists if they take evasive action.
‘It’s virtually impossible to get out the gate. If Environment had used a little bit of common sense, they wouldn’t have heard from me. What’s so difficult about putting in a ‘slow’ sign and a concealed exit one?’ he said.
The vinery site is currently not in everyday use, but could be again one day, according to Mr Batiste.
He said that he contacted the department about the issue but was told the signs were not needed.
Environment confirmed he had spoken to a member of staff.
‘The department is reluctant to introduce a concealed-exit sign as it can be ignored by motorists when used in conjunction with an access where there is a low volume of vehicle movement,’ said a department spokesman.
‘It should be noted there are very many difficult exits on island roads and the department is not in a position to place mirrors on all of them.’
The spokesman added that it might be expected that alterations to the road layouts in the vicinity of the new schools would affect many residents in different ways.
‘The department, in responding to the situation, has endeavoured to create a system that will be generally safer for all who use the roads.
‘The full effects of the changes will not be clear until the schools have been operating for some time, but the department will monitor the situation as it develops. It would not, therefore, be prudent to make adjustments at this stage.’
