DOORS opened for the first day of the first term at St Sampson’s High and Le Murier Schools this morning.
Head teacher of St Sampson’s High, Hazel Tetlaw, pictured, said the start of any new school year gave her a buzz but this was a little bit special.
‘It really is difficult to put into words just what an experience this is. It is just a totally new feeling. It caps anything I have ever had in all my years of education.’
She said it was important to remember that, as good as the new building was, a school was more than just bricks and mortar.
‘It really is a flagship school for the island.’
Ms Tetlaw said the Environment Department had worked incredibly hard to put in place a traffic system that would make the roads surrounding the new school safe for children. In a staggered start, Years 7 and 11 entered the school for the first time today, with all pupils starting tomorrow.
The Baubigny schools opened a day later than other States schools in order to allow staff additional time to finish preparations.
Facilities at the school include a spring-boarded sports hall, climbing wall, swimming pool and an AstroTurf hockey pitch. There is also a specialist dance studio and theatre.
Sports facilities in particular will be shared between both schools and include a smaller swimming pool fitted out with specialist equipment for Le Murier students.
The project is the first major undertaking in a series by the Education Department, which now hopes to start similar projects for students at Les Beaucamps and La Mare de Carteret.
