POLICE yesterday released further CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in relation to a ram raid at Venture Garage last week.

They have been given a number of names for the person suspected of carrying out the theft and are now narrowing down the suspects.

Yesterday’s release of a further image is part of that process and officers hope islanders will be able to identify the man above – widely regarded as Guernsey’s most heartless thief –   and secure a successful prosecution.

Charity boxes containing cash that was to be donated to the GSPCA in memory of former garage employee Ben Davies, were stolen when a Peugeot 306 saloon was driven through the shop doors.

Proprietor Chris McClean said everybody was keen to see whoever was responsible brought to justice. ‘Stealing charity boxes is bad enough but when the money’s been donated in memory of someone who has just died it’s unbelievable.’

Mr Davies died in a motorbike accident at Route de Plaisance on 8 August and his funeral was held on Tuesday.

Five charity boxes were taken in the raid. Three in memory of Mr Davies are thought to have contained between £200 and £400.

Mr McClean said the response from customers had been overwhelming and they were donating money again. ‘One man has said that if that insurers won’t cover the theft he will,’ he said. ‘Someone from Town drove out to say how appalled they were by the theft and handed me a cheque for £150 made out to the fund.’

That, Mr McClean said, proved there were still good people in the island.

Police are keen to identify the man who was captured on CCTV at the garage last Saturday at about 10.20pm. They also want to trace the whereabouts of the Peugeot 306, registration 33708, between 10.20pm and 11.25pm that day.

It was used to smash open the door and was found ablaze afterwards in a nearby lane.

They want to speak to anyone who was near the  garage forecourt between 8pm and 10pm.
