BAUBIGNY has been reclaimed for vulnerable road users, according to Living Streets secretary Pat Wisher.
The pressure group campaigned tirelessly for safer roads around the schools – which included the one-way system, raised pavement and cycle path – and she said the results were a huge success.
‘I’m overwhelmed by it all because I never thought we would get it. There was such a lot of opposition to the one-way system and I never thought we would get here so full marks to the Environment Department for doing it,’ she said.
Mrs Wisher, pictured, walked the route a year ago one morning when the road was still two-way.
‘It was horrendous. There were no more than about 10 students walking back then.’
She said the new wide pavements meant students could walk easily in groups.
‘They have shared the road space equally between cars and vulnerable road users which, especially near a school, is absolutely how it should be.’
‘I think it is fantastic. There were so many students walking and cycling.
‘I was worried that there still wouldn’t be people walking but it was fabulous,’ she said.
She said it had been vital to get the infrastructure in place which would enable children to walk and cycle to school safely.
