WORTHY young people will be recognised by the second annual youth awards which are launched today.
They are aimed at those aged between 11 and 25 and recognise their positive achievements. ‘We want to give people a chance to shine,’ said Guernsey Youth Services organiser Kate Chandler. ‘We know that young people are often shown in a negative light and this is a chance to see them in a more positive way.’
There are three awards available for nominations. The Bobby Le Vasseur Memorial is for dedicated service. It is sponsored by the Bailiwick of Guernsey Youth Association and is aimed at recognising those who have helped serve the islands.
‘We want nominations about those who have given their time over a number of years,’ said Mrs Chandler. ‘For example, if someone started in a club and then went on to run it.’
The second award is the Jan Renouf Memorial for outstanding contribution to the community and is sponsored by the Guernsey Press.
‘This is a very open category,’ said Mrs Chandler. ‘It can be someone who has helped with a sports club or coached someone along. There are no limits.’
The final award is the Triumph Over Adversity one, sponsored by Guernsey Electricity.
‘This award will go to a young person who has overcome obstacles to get where they are,’ said Mrs Chandler. ‘It’s for someone who has succeeded despite difficulties, whether they are physical or from their background.’
Anyone can nominate a young person for these awards on the official form, downloadable on this page. Young people who were nominated last year are also eligible to be nominated again if they did not win. Last year the awards attracted 27 entries. It is hoped this year will see even more people put forward.
Guernsey Electricity is backing the awards as it likes to sponsor youth and community events said its engineering director Steve Morris.
The shortlisted entries will be invited to a glittering awards evening on 6 November where winners will be presented with a trophy and money prize. Closing date for entries is 3 October.
