GUERNSEY UNITED is not a step Jersey will look to follow. That is the opinion of Jersey Football Association chief executive officer Paul Creeden, who says he has seen it happen before with Newport, Isle of Wight.
The plan for the newly created Guernsey United is to play in the Football Association league pyramid system, starting in the Kent Premier League, from next season. Creeden said there are downfalls as a club moves up the system.
‘What Guernsey do is up to them, but I think it would be a mistake for Jersey to go down the same route because I’ve seen what happened to Newport from the Isle of Wight when I was involved with the Hampshire FA,’ said Creeden.
‘It went very well for them at the start as they moved up the divisions and through the leagues, but the further they went the harder it became because they did not have the strength in depth. That’s when they started to bring in outsiders and because they were in the Ryman League the players want wages [which were unofficial] and that created further problems.’
