GFA to run ad for new boss

02064081.jpgTHE man in the street can throw his hat into the ring for the vacant island manager’s job.

This follows news that the Guernsey Football Association is going to advertise the post. Mark Le Tissier, the GFA chairman (pictured), explained:

‘There are quite a few names being suggested in local football circles at the present time and we believe that it would make the board’s decision easier if they knew who was genuinely interested in the appointment.’

The association has been without a senior island manager since Steve Ogier, along with his assistant Tony Vance, resigned last month after it became clear the GFA, prompted by the island’s senior clubs, did not wish them to carry on while they were associated with Guernsey United.

The football grapevine has linked several current and past coaches with the job which has little to involve interested parties this side of Christmas, but a good deal in 2009.

This season’s senior island programme consists of a proposed three-team tournament at Easter, the Cimandis Muratti Vase and the NatWest Island Games in Aland.

The GFA fixtures have also been arranged to give whoever is in charge of the squad specific weekends for coaching sessions in preparation for those games.

One of the first tasks for the new manager would be to pick a squad for Aland. The GFA is in the process of asking players about their availability for the Games next summer.

With the cost of the trip in mind, the GFA states it is important that a squad is announced as soon as possible to give as much time as possible for funds to be raised.

The GFA board decided that the manager would initially be appointed until the conclusion of the Island Games and that applications will be treated in confidence and should be made in writing to GFA county secretary Neil Laine.

The closing date is Saturday 18 October.

The only person that should be the Island Boss is Steve Ogier.

Now that the ridiculous idea of Guernsey United seems to be out of the news, and hopefully it will not ever come back, I think that the GFA should speak with Steve.

Actions and words in the heat of something so prospectively damaging to local football, as the Guernsey United fiasco is, I think that everyone should stop to reflect, consider everyones point of view, think about what is happening right here and now and reappoint Steve and his team to take our Island football forwards.

In return Steve should clearly withdraw his name from the Guernsey United consortium and make it clear to all of the players and supporters of Guernsey football that he will remain loyal to them and the GFA.
