AN OVERTIME thriller has got the Women’s Basketball League off to a dramatic start.
It was Jenny Rees who converted the vital final points of the game as Louvre Group edged out Shootin’ Starz 36-34.
Both teams were fielding a new line-up and that made for a scrappy affair, with the experienced Rees, one of her side’s newcomers, the outstanding player as she scored 18 and had a hand in everything good from Louvre Group.
Shootin’ Starz battled hard and fought their way back into it to lead heading into the last minute, but their opponents managed to find the basket one more time to take the game into the extra period.
Again it remained close, but it was Louvre who nicked the win thanks to MVP Rees.
LAST season’s champions might have lost their big guns, but Goldridge Estate Agents One still had more than enough to defeat Bredoyle 71-48 in the opening Division Two contest.
Shek Sessay and Chris Lamb have both moved up into the top flight, but they were hardly missed as GEA led from start to finish.
MVP Phil English was all over the court as he hussled and harried the Bredoyle guards.
His shooting was also on top form as he led the scorers with 18.
Nick Ford was on hand for GEA to pick up anything loose underneath the boards as he added 16.
Robin Le Page was Bredoyle’s ‘go to’ guy as he picked up a hard-earned 17 points.
MANZUR and RGF entertained the crowd with a hard’fought contest for three quarters before Manzur pulled away in the fourth.
Liz Kerr was exceptional as she ran the show, hitting shots and bringing her teammates into the game.
RGF were led by the inside presence of Elliott Weakes and Liam Docherty, but Manzur’s experience showed as they closed out the game in some style to record an 80-58 victory.
MVP Kerr finished with 25 points for the victors while Weakes top-scored for RGF with 16.
IN A one-sided game, GTS steamrollered Capital PVC 73-8 to record their first win of the season.
Capital looked good in patches and played aggressively and enthusiastically, but they must work at their shooting and passing in order to improve this season.
GTS were led by island player Sammie Redhead, who scored 21 points. She was ably assisted by last season’s Women’s B MVP Elka De Carteret, who added 14.
COLLINS STEWART HEAT started their season strongly as they made light work of GEA’s second team, 95-39.
Both looked rusty early on, but it was CS that settled first and put together some good runs to open up an unassailable lead by the half.
Tom Creed and MVP Andy Maiden got on the end of most of the Heat’s scoring chances as they bagged 24 and 27 respectively.
For GEA, only Luke Vaudin made it into double figures as he fought hard for 14 points.
