Twaite shad catches continue with heaviest yet

A THIRD twaite shad has been caught in the St Peter Port Harbour area. First it was Jay Ferbrache with his 1-9-5 specimen, the second was the 1-12-12 potential shore-caught record landed by Sam Robins and now it’s a 1-12-15 fish caught by Peter Rihoy.

Although it beats Robins’ catch, Rihoy’s fish will not challenge him for the record. The reason? It was caught from a vessel moored alongside and is therefore classed as a boat-caught fish.

It does not beat the boat record, which is a 1-14-4 fish landed by George Staples at Godine in February 1982.

Rihoy caught his shad on a legered garfish strip and has entered it in the October Fish of the Month competition.

There was an amazing coincidence when young anglers David Dyson and Macauley Tulie entered their catches in the October FOM.

Both were ballan wrasse, both were weighed on the Record Committee’s scales and both were exactly the same, 4-11-1.

Dyson’s was caught at the White Rock on ragworm presented on paternoster tackle, while Tulie’s was landed at Saint’s Bay Harbour on legered lugworm.

The two fish will be judged against the 8-10-13 shore record.

The biggest rod-caught bass reported this year has become an entry in the October Fish of the Month.

Nigel Bourgaize, fishing on an undisclosed boat mark, had a 17-5-12 specimen on his legered sandeel bait.

This superb fish was only 1-1-0 below the Bailiwick boat record.

It was a good week for bass for Gary Robilliard had an incredible brace with fish weighing 12-3-13 and 12-0-13. They had been tempted by legered sandeel bait on a mark east of Sark. Both have been submitted as FOM entries.

All three bass will be judged against the 18-6-12 boat record. They have all been entered in the Phoenix Fish Bass competition.

JOHN HATTON has won the Guernsey Sea Anglers Club’s Ron Harris Conger Trophy which is awarded to the winner of the two-leg boat series.

In the first, Hatton had landed two eels for a total weight of 53-3-0 to take second place.

He repeated his catch of two conger on the second leg, his fish weighing 49-6-0 and 24-11-0 for a total weight of 74-1-0.

His biggest eel was the heaviest boated over the two legs, the overall winning total being four fish for 127-4-0.

Eight members turned out for the evening event and were taken to the cement wreck in the Little Russel.

Four of the anglers found six conger for a total weight of 177-3-0. Adie Sarre, the winner of the first leg, could manage only a 35-10-0 specimen and dropped back to second spot with a total of three conger for 103-5-0.

New club member J. Jones had fish of 34-8-0 and 22-8-0 for 57-0-0, which put him in third place overall.

John Davey’s two fish for 32-14-0 caught on the first leg gave him fourth spot, while Martin Crittell’s first-leg catch of an 11-0-0 eel placed him fifth.

Esther Hatton completed the second-leg catches with a 10-8-0 fish to finish in sixth place.

Over the two legs, the members landed 13 conger for a total weight of 340-15-0, an average of 26-3-10.

TWO fish, a 4-2-0 grey mullet and a 0-9-0 garfish, were enough to give Steve Huxster victory in the West Coast Sea Angling Club’s all day in Herm match.

The event attracted 10 members and eight found fish, the total catch consisting of 15 garfish and grey mullet, six black bream, three ballan wrasse and one mackerel.

Current Herm championship leader Lee Gillot finished third with two black bream for 3-8-0 and 26 points to go with the last Herm competition for a lead of 93.75 over second-placed Steve Huxster.

That must confirm Gillot as favourite to take the title.

Shane Huxster finished fourth on the leg with two black bream for 2-12-0 and 23 points and has retained his lead in the overall championship with a gap of 77.75 over Steve Greenway.

With one more Herm match and a harbour shore competition to come, Huxster cannot afford to rest on his laurels.

The catch in the competition was well below expectations. A small party of WCSAC members had a week’s fishing in Herm and disappointingly the trend continues.

They had plenty of small black bream, 10 grey mullet, four bull huss including an 11-13-0 specimen by Shane Huxster, some red mullet and a few modest bass.
