THERE is a familiar look to the Guernsey Sea Anglers Club’s overall and shore championship lists as Peter Frise is the leader of both and by big margins in each.
He had a runaway win in the all-day in Herm match for the Anquetil Cup. He landed 23 garfish, four ballan wrasse and seven black bream for 35-15-0 and a massive 303.75 points.
Mike Weysom in second place had six garfish and three ballan wrasse for 11-7-0 and 95.75 points. The event attracted an unusually low number of seven members and all but one found fish.
The total catch consisted of 38 garfish, 11 ballan wrasse, one grey mullet, nine black bream and one mackerel.
The top two fish of the day were a 5-5-10 ballan wrasse by Frise, which gave him the competition kitty, and a 4-9-5 wrasse by Weysom.
As a result of the match, Frise’s lead over Weysom in the overall list is 214.75 points and 171 on the shore one.
THE Alderney Festival got off to a modest start with only eight qualifiers being entered on the first day.
The grey-mullet category saw two entries. UK angler Jeff Plumridge had a 4-14-4 fish while Guernsey’s Mark Bourgaize had one of 4-7-2.
Surprisingly no black bream were recorded but an Alderney angler did find a fish for the Couch’s sea bream category, a 1-6-6 specimen.
Alderney’s Dick Smith had one of the two entries in the over 5-0-0 section, landing a 7-6-6 small-eyed ray. After weighing formalities, it was returned alive.
Jamie Sugden, also from Alderney, submitted an 8-7-8 bull huss. There were three entries in the under 5-0-0 section. Jersey angler Steve Matchias had a 1-6-10 cuckoo wrasse, while his compatriot, Syd Reynolds, landed a 1-14-8 golden-grey mullet.
The catch list was completed by Alderney’s Jasper Osborne who caught a 1-6-6 tub gurnard.
There were no entries for ballan wrasse, bass, conger, plaice or sole, or garfish or mackerel, but fish for all these categories will surely follow as the week progresses.
One aspect that must have delighted the organisers and their sponsors was the support the event has received.
There had been some conjecture that due to the current economic situation, numbers would be down on previous years.
In the event 109 anglers have entered to date, eight up on last year’s 101.
LIZ DEWE has won Sark AC’s October competition and as a result has further consolidated her lead at the top of the club championship.
Her winning bag was five black bream, one ballan wrasse and four garfish for 8-5-0 and 45.25 points.
The event attracted 10 members and seven found fish, the total catch consisting of nine ballan wrasse, eight black bream and four garfish. The competition was a seven-hour roving shore match.
Second on the day was Levi Doran who had two black bream and two ballan wrasse for 5-13-0 and 33.25 points.
Current runner-up in the championship race Glyn Williams could finish only fourth with two ballan wrasse for 2-15-0 and 13.75 points. Dewe’s lead at the top of the overall list is now 53.5 points.
There were no notable fish on the day: the heaviest wrasse was 2-5-0 and top black bream just 1-5-0.
MATT MAHY has entered a boat-caught tope in the October Fish of the Month competition.
He was with Richard Seager on Out the Blue east of Sark when his legered mackerel bait was taken by a 16.7 kilo fish, which equates to 36-13-1. It will be judged against the 55-12-0 Bailiwick boat record.
As from Saturday, entries will be accepted for the November competition. Prizes will be the Shakespeare Monthly Angling Award for the top overall fish, the Select Decor Tankard for the best boat-caught specimen and the J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the top shore-caught fish.
There are the two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s Bass beers, the Aval du Creux monthly junior award and the Tackle Direct spot prize.
