Not too frightening, but even the sausages came in coffins

GHOSTS, ghouls and Goths invaded Castle Cornet at Halloween.

Dozens of families were among the 450 people at an event organised by Culture and Leisure. ‘I was thoroughly impressed by how much effort had gone into all the outfits that people wore.

‘It really brought the castle to life,’ said director of museums Jason Monaghan. The £5 entry for all included either witches’ brew soup or sausage in a coffin, prepared at the castle cafe.

Staff from sponsor Healthy Direct organised games, in one of which people had to put on a polythene glove before dipping their hand into five pots and deciding which of Frankenstein’s body parts was in each.

Dr Monaghan said the evening was aimed at providing a mixture of thrills and fear but without giving anyone nightmares.

‘To make sure that nobody got spooked too much, we also had storytellers explaining how people could keep the witches and nasty beings away,’ he said.

The Tattoo Parlour offered spoof tattooing and ear piercing by a character called Boris, wearing a ‘blood’-spattered apron and wielding a drill that made plenty of noise.

Revellers were given a book of spells on entry to the castle, which gave instructions for the games that could be played.

The fun took place between 5.30 and 7.30pm.

‘We did it for 300 people last year and demand for places outstripped supply, so we made it even bigger this year,’ said Dr Monaghan. ‘The castle, with its nooks and crannies, lends itself to these sorts of event so well, particularly Halloween.’
