SHIP & CROWN PUFFINS jumped to the top of the Investec Women’s Division One with a 3-0 victory over Vixens at the weekend.
The goals came courtesy of promising junior Megan Stewart, with two, and joint-captain Alex Hanna at a short corner.
But Vixens, who are currently looking for a sponsor, produced a performance that they could be proud of. Their sweeper Caroline Matthews was particularly impressive.
‘I was very pleased everyone kept working so hard in the second half as the weather conditions were appalling and yet we all remained focused on the task,’ said club stalwart Jayne Carter.
The three points meant Puffins joined AP Group Panthers on nine, but are ahead due to a better goal difference.
Last year’s champions Panthers also tasted success in the latest round of matches when they got the better of the newly-formed Legis Independents, 5-3.
Panthers’ goals were provided by Kath Guille and Jay Ap Sion, with two each, and Greta Raath.
Ellen Jones, Elizabeth Russell and exciting young striker Chloe Dawes got Indies’ goals.
The oranges remain bottom of the table having now played four and lost four, but their captain Debbie Hunter thinks their luck will change soon.
‘We looked greatly improved and are growing in confidence every game,’ she said.
‘The first win is definitely getting closer.’
And in the league’s final game at the weekend, last week’s leaders Brewin Dolphin Amazons went down at the hands of Clubhouse Cubs, 6-5.
The result sees Amazons drop down to fourth.
‘It was a great performance from Amazons, who clearly had the upper hand throughout the game,’ said Cubs captain Phillipa Stahelin.
‘We were concerned about the team folding at the start of the season, but we are turning out to be a strong and determined team.
‘We won’t go down without a fight, which showed on Saturday.’Investec Women’s League: Goal difference separates the top two
