GUERNSEY’S best player, Jim Regnard, is out for the rest season with a broken leg.  The big number eight broke his left shinbone and dislocated his ankle in training on Tuesday night.

It is understood to have happened when he tackled team-mate and prop Layton Batiste.  Regnard underwent an operated on Wednesday night and a plate was attached to the fracture. He is due to be released from hospital today and he is not expected to return to action before the end of the season.

‘It is a big blow, but it gives the younger guys a chance to stand up and be counted for,’ said a defiant Guernsey captain Simon Sharratt.  ‘One negative creates positives and opportunities for other guys in the squad, but we are going to miss him.’

The first game he misses is today’s crucial London Three South-West League match at KCS Old Boys in Surrey.

The greens find themselves mid-table with wins over London Cornish, Winchester and at London Irish Amateur, while their opponents are bottom, having not won a match so far this campaign.

Apart from Regnard, Guernsey field a full-strength side and welcome back player-coach Jordan Reynalds.

The Australian, who can play either fly-half or centre, broke his collarbone and damaged his AC [acromioclavicular] joint during the team’s 51-5 win over Old Wimbledonians last February.

He will start this afternoon’s match on the bench and look to possibly make an impact later on in the game.

Next week’s match will arguable be more of a challenge for the Sarnians as they take on Guildford, who are a couple of places above them in the league.

‘We’re looking to put a couple of points on the board, get our second away win and hopefully push on,’ said Sharratt of today’s clash.
