North v Rangers 6-6 Jeremie tie.
THEY wrote it up as the greatest local game of all-time, although every local football fan probably will come up with an alternative view.
But if a sheer scoreline is a reliable guide then North and Rangers’ 6-6 draw after extra-time 46 years ago this month, takes some beating.
North were, after all, the defending Priaulx champions and Rangers still had Muratti greats such as Dick Vaudin, a young Wally Torode and Les Arnold in their side.
Rex Bennet summed up the preliminary round Jeremie Cup tie at the Track, with one word: Fantastic.
Rangers led 2-0 at half-time, but the second period was only two minutes old when North levelled. The chocolate-and-blues moved to 4-2 before an Arnold hat-trick shot Rangers 5-4 ahead.
Two more goals from Jim Eker put North 6-5 ahead, only for Arnold to hit his fourth and rescue a draw for a Rangers side who were deemed unlucky by the reporter.
In the 89th minute reserve centre-forward John Domaille hit a goalbound shot which just about everyone in the ground, bar the ref, thought was handled by defender Geoff Cox.
Had a penalty been given and converted, Rangers would have been 6-4 to the good, but, as it was, moments later Eker headed in what seemed a blatantly offside goal.
Other scorers that day were Torode, who hit two before swapping stripes and heading for St Martin’s, Barry Mahy (two) and Eker four.
Yet, despite Eker’s four-goal contribution, Bennet highlighted Arnold as the game’s star performer. ‘The inside-left was the supreme footballer and schemer, while young Wally Torode responded well to his leadership, giving Lloyd Duquemin his most uncomfortable afternoon in a long time.’
