FIREFIGHTERS stripped off their uniforms in the name of charity.

The Fire and Rescue Service has created a calendar to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity and to help equip every island home with a smoke detector.

‘The aim is to raise money for the smoke alarm scheme, which was launched in 1997, fitting alarms into the home of every Guernsey resident over 60,’ said community fire safety manager Andy Mauger.

‘Money is raised from donations from a variety of local businesses, fund-raising events and open days. This scheme was extended to cover a number of people who, while not over 60 years of age, were considered at risk.

‘While the service has now fitted over 2,800 free alarms, it is now intended that the scheme should be made available to all Guernsey residents, regardless of age or status, as an integral part of the free home fire safety checks that the service provides, which are carried out by fire crews and the community department. But supplying the alarms will be at a cost and we need desperately to raise money first.’

Money raised by the calendar will be divided equally between the alarm scheme and The Fire Fighters Charity, which supports firemen during their time of need.

The calendar has been released in time for Christmas and features 12 pages of semi-naked firemen. It is available in a desktop and A3 format.

One of the firemen who posed for the calendar was 34-year-old Steve Adam.

‘I did it just for a laugh really. The Fire Fighters Charity is a good thing to raise cash for.

‘I think I’m in the latter half of the year but I haven’t seen a full copy of it yet.

‘Hopefully this will raise quite a bit of money. We are looking to raise more than we did with the firefighters’ ball.’

nÊThe calendars are available from the Fire and Rescue control room at the Town Arsenal. They will also be sold during late shopping evenings on the Bridge and in Town. They cost £4.99 for an A3 version and £3.99 for the desktop.
