Speeding tickets no bad thing

BEAU Sejour Barracudas Swimming Club sent a team of 40 children aged from eight to 12 to the 19th Up and Comers Sprint Meet staged by Tigers Swimming Club of Jersey.

The event is designed primarily to encourage youngsters within the four Channel Island clubs who have not yet reached medal standard at CI championship level.

Consideration times are set with ‘speeding tickets’ being issued to those swimmers recording times three seconds faster than their entry times.

The Barracudas contingent swam well and returned with a huge medal haul of no fewer than 10 gold, 18 silver and 18 bronze medals.

Competing in the youngest age group, eight-year-olds, Hannah Rosumek particularly excelled, winning two events, the 50m individual medley and 50m breaststroke in 1-50.41 and 56.27 respectively.

She also received a silver medal for the 50m freestyle and a bronze in the 50m backstroke.

Double gold wins also went to 11-year-old Rory Chamberlain in freestyle and breaststroke, both in personal best times, with his time in the 50m breaststroke being over three seconds faster than his entered one.

In the same age group Max Thornton received a medal for all five of his races, his best event being the 50m backstroke where he won gold in 40.77.

Freddy Moss, also 11, claimed the 50m butterfly title.

Andrews’ time in the 50m freestyle of 36.81 was another lifetime best and earned him a silver medal with Ashcroft gaining the bronze.

James Vine, 12, performed exceedingly well with personal bests in all five swims topped by gold in the 50m breaststroke.

Other great medal winning performances came from Matthew and Jonathan Beck, Francesca Fossey, Kirsty Hart, Bronnie and Morgan James, Daniel Le Messurier, Emily Lowe, Emma Miller, Ellen Morley, Stephen Reynolds, George Staples, Isabelle Thompson, Joshua Thornton and Elliott Vine.
