HEATHER WATSON is set to break into the world’s top 50 juniors after the best result of her career.
The Guernsey player, pictured, beat the girl currently ranked seventh in the world in the final of the Yucatan World Cup in Mexico on Saturday.
Having lost the first set to top seed Ana Bogdan, she fought back to overcome the Romanian 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and take her first ITF Group 1 title.
It comes at the end of a fantastic year for Sportingbet-sponsored Watson.
The Sarnian star has climbed up the rankings from 324 at the start of 2008 and she could be in the top 40 when the new rankings are unveiled today, making her the second highest ranked Briton behind junior Wimbledon winner Laura Robson.
She also won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in October and helped the British team finish runners-up to the USA in the under-16 equivalent of the Fed Cup.
This week Watson will be competing in the Group 1 Eddie Herr International tournament at the Bollettieri Academy in Florida, where she is based.
More success there should see her climb further up the rankings before the end of the year.gleprevost@guernsey-press.com
