GUERNSEY rued a lack of firepower as they crashed out of the second round of the HA Trophy at the hands of Richmond on Sunday.
It was the first time that the Investec-sponsored island women’s hockey side had entered the national knockout competition.
After receiving a bye in the first round, they found themselves drawn to play away at Richmond, who feature in South League Division 3B.
The young Guernsey side, which had seven players aged 18 and under, went down 3-0.
‘We really lacked a bit of firepower up front, but the girls acquitted themselves very well,’ said Guernsey coach Andy Whalley (pictured). ‘They [Richmond] are a well seasoned side. We’ve got a bit of work to do on our finishing.’
The visitors started off slowly and despite getting into the game midway through the first half, found themselves 1-0 down at half-time.
According to Whalley, what let them down was the fact that they did not get one shot off in five short corners.
In the second half the home side proceeded to rule the roost, scoring another two times.
It could have been a lot more if it were not for the heroics of Emma Atkinson in the Guernsey goal.
The Greens are going to have to wait until next season before they can have another crack of the whip.
‘We’re looking to enter again next year,’ said Whalley.
‘The girls thoroughly enjoyed it. It took a lot of years for the guys to get their standard up there.’HA Trophy: Island side lose at Richmond
