LEADERS North can jump five points clear of Bels tonight.

The chocolate-and-blues face Rovers under the Northfield lights and victory over the bottom-placed side, who have yet to register a win in the league this season, would put the hosts on 26 points from 11 games.

‘It’s a game we need to win, especially after Saturday,’ said North boss Mick Le Prevost.

The weekend saw North crash out in the quarter-finals of the Crimestoppers Guernsey FA Cup at the hands of Bels.

North’s great rivals themselves meet Rovers in the league on Saturday at Port Soif.

Bels’ chances of regaining the league title have been hampered by island striker Marc McGrath and Billy Page moving to St Martin’s.

Le Prevost refused to comment as to whether he felt his own team’s chances of claiming the league, which they won the season before last, had improved with the goings on at Bels.

‘I never worry about anyone else – all I’m concerned about is my team,’ he said.

‘They [Bels] deserved to win on Saturday but if we play to our best ability, which I know we can, we’ve got a good chance of winning the league.’

Now into the second half of the season, the league is certainly heating up.

The big matches coming up are when North and Bels face each other, on Saturday 28 February and Tuesday 10 March, both at the Track.

Saturday 7 March sees Bels take on St Martin’s, which also promises to be a spicy affair.

Le Prevost feels the league is wide open.

‘The league can go anywhere yet,’ he said.

‘There’s still eight games to go with a lot of football to play. We’ve got to take each game as it comes.’

Le Prevost is without captain Darren Martin and other regular fullback Ollie McKenzie tonight, but his son Alex and Gavin Le Page reunite in central midfield.

Having come off at half-time on Saturday, Craig Young is fit enough to make the bench as Gareth Holden partners Simon Tostevin up front.Sure Mobile Senior County League Division One: Rovers visit Northfield tonight
