Peter Frise has won the GSAC’s Willmott Cup.
SEVEN new records have been approved by the Bailiwick of Guernsey Record (Rod-Caught) Fish Committee, one freshwater and six sea fish, four of which were boat-caught.
Belgian angler Roger Raedts added a new species to the lists, his 12-6-2 thornback ray filling a vacancy in the boat records.
Richard Seager is the new record holder for starry smooth hound, his 14-3-0 specimen ousting the 12-7-6 previous boat record, which had stood since April 1979.
Alderney angler Dick Smith took over the boat-caught record for grey mullet. His 8-7-6 fish, caught from a kayak in Longy Bay, easily beating the previous record of 6-3-4, which was also caught in Alderney in December 2005.
The new boat records were completed by Kevin Beausire with his 1-5-8 Spanish mackerel, which removed the 1-2-2 previous best that had been caught in August 2001.
Sam Robins is the new shore-caught record holder for thwaite shad. His 1-12-12 specimen being an improvement on the 1-10-8 previous record.
The other new shore record is the 3-4-7 Couch’s sea bream landed by Simon Newton.
This fish, along with Beausire’s Spanish mackerel, has been submitted for British records, but there could be a long delay before they are considered by the national body.
The National Federation of Sea Anglers, who were responsible for running the record committee, has been disbanded and has joined four other angling associations to form the Angling Trust.
Hopefully this new body will take over the running of the BRFC but, bearing in mind the huge amount of work and re-organisation that the formation of the new body will mean, it could be a considerable time before the future of the BRFC is finally decided.
The last record approved by the local committee was the 16-13-0 grass carp landed by Steve Le Cloarec.
The meeting also approved the 2009 Channel Island record lists. There will be only four new records this year, three from our Bailiwick and one from Jersey.
Once approval has been received from Jersey, the 2009 record list booklet will go to print and will, hopefully, be available from all the tackle shops sometime in February.
ALDERNEY angler Dick Smith won the top awards in the December Fish of the Month competition with his 8-7-6 boat-caught grey mullet.
It smashed the record and was worth 136.39%, a figure high enough to ensure he won the Shakespeare Monthly Award for the top overall fish and the Alderney Angling and Sports Tankard for the best boat-caught specimen.
With such a score he must become the main contender for the Fish of the Year Award.
The J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the best shore-caught fish went to Dave Vaudin for his 2-3-6 golden grey mullet, which scored 73.31%.
The two runner-up prizes of Bucktrouts Bass Beers went to Colin Druce’s 17-3-11 boat-caught bass for 93.53% and Colin Marquis’ 16-12-1 boat-caught bass, 91.63%.
The Aval du Creux junior prize went to Toby Patch for his 5-4-9 shore-caught ballan wrasse, 60.92%.
The Tackle Direct spot prize was won by Russell Goddard, who had entered an 8-1-1 boat-caught brill worth 59.47%.
The unsuccessful entries were: James Renier, 16-4-15 boat-caught bass, 88.53%; Colin Marquis, 15-6-14 boat-caught bass, 83.75% and Andy Le Lerre, 5-5-11 shore-caught ballan wrasse, 61.73%.
Prizes at stake for the January competition are the Shakespeare Award for the best overall specimen, the Alderney Sea Angling Club Tankard for the top boat-caught fish and the J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the best shore fish. There are the two runner-up prizes of Bucktrouts Bass beers, the Tackle Direct spot prize and the Aval du Creux Hotel junior award.
Paul Woods is hoping to win one of those awards, for he caught a sea trout at Saints Bay.
He was spinning with a plug when he hooked the 3-9-9 specimen, which will be judged against the 4-11-2 Bailiwick shore record.
PETER FRISE has won the Guernsey Sea Anglers Club’s Willmott Cup, which is for a three-leg, non-championship shore series.
On a bitterly cold morning, just six members turned out for the final leg, an eight-hour roving event.
Only three weighed in, the total catch consisting of two black bream, two ballan wrasse and 53 garfish.
Frise’s winning bag was the two wrasse and 31 garfish for 27-0-0 and 202 points.
Len Hall was second with 19 garfish for 12-4-0 and 87 points, while Jason Brown took third spot with the two bream and three garfish for 3-12-0 and 41 points.
Frise’s catch included a 5-7-0 ballan wrasse, which gave him the competition kitty. His final overall winning total was 561 points, 305 clear of second-placed Adie Sarre.Bailiwick of Guernsey Record (Rod-Caught) Fish Committee: Records approved
