Pollack gives Huxster top fish entry

ENTRIES for the January Fish of the Month have petered out in recent days.

However, Shane Huxster found one specimen worthy of an entry when he fished a south-coast shore mark.

He was fishing with a legered mackerel hoping for a conger or bull huss, but it was a 10-6-0 pollack that grabbed his bait.

It will be judged against the 16-1-6 Bailiwick shore record.

As from Sunday, entries will be welcomed for the February competition.

Prizes to be won will be the Shakespeare monthly award for the top overall fish, the Alderney SAC Tankard for the best boat specimen and the J. Meerveld and Sons tankard for the top shore-caught fish.

There are the two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s Bass beers, the Aval du Creux Hotel junior award and the Tackle Direct spot prize.

THE majority of the committee were re-elected at the annual general meeting of the West Coast Sea Angling Club.

President Sam Robins, vice president Scott McMillan, treasurer Paul McLaren and fish recorder Steve Huxster were all returned unopposed.

Shane Huxster is the new club secretary, filling the position vacated by Mark Addlesee.

Andy Le Lerre filled the social secretary’s post that had been held by Shane.

Neil Hoolahan became assistant secretary, replacing Le Lerre.

Simon Fletcher was re-elected as one of the club’s delegates to the Bailiwick of Guernsey Record (Rod-Caught) Fish Committee, but John Rothwell was elected as the second delegate, replacing John Holdaway.

The members agreed one rule change. They will now be able to use three rods with a maximum total of three hooks in club competitions. They were previously restricted to two rods.

A new trophy will be up for grabs this year. It will be awarded for the heaviest boat-caught bull huss.

IT IS the time of year when angling clubs reflect on the previous season and prepare for the new one. The result is a plethora of meetings and presentation nights.

The Bailiwick Bass Club’s annual general meeting will be held at Les Rocquettes Hotel on Thursday 19 February at 7.30pm.

The club’s annual presentation night will take place at the same hotel on Saturday 18 April.

The club has also confirmed the dates of their open events for 2009. The Bass Festival will run from Friday 19 June through to Monday 22 June.

The Children’s Open will be held on Sunday 13 September, from 10am to noon.

The Guernsey Sea Anglers Club annual general meeting will take place at La Villette Hotel on Monday 16 February at 7.30pm.

Its annual dinner and presentation night will also be at La Villette Hotel on Saturday 28 March.
