GUERNSEY track cyclist Jo Hamon (pictured) made her international debut at the fifth and final round of the UCI World Cup classics held in Ballerup, Copenhagen.
With only a few weeks of preparation, Hamon showed her potential by recording a 500m time that was two seconds faster than her personal best, another huge step on the way to her target time for qualification for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
‘I have only returned to track-specific training since the new year and the aim for Copenhagen was simply to go and gain experience and so to come away with a PB by more than two seconds was fantastic,’ Hamon said.
‘I am really excited now to get on with the next phase of my training and improve my times yet further.’
Victory in the event went to Cuban world champion Lisandra Guerra, who beat riders such as Olympic, world and Commonwealth champion Victoria Pendleton (Great Britain) and current world record holder Anna Meares of Australia.
‘It was great to be riding alongside the best track cyclists in the world who I watch and learn a lot from. Although I appreciate I have a lot of work to do, I find it amazing that I’ve moved from a local to an international rider in a just few months,’ Hamon said.
Her next big event, which includes 500m TT qualifying for Commonwealth Games, is the British National Track Cycling Championships in October.
However, she will be competing in sprint and keirin events throughout Europe during the summer.
