Beere ‘red’ alert

0631677.jpgWHILE a Jerseyman has emerged as the biggest threat to Lucy Beere’s gold medal hopes in Cyprus, Guernsey have moved into third place in the team standings.

The penultimate day of action at the European Championships proved to be another successful one for the greens. The Sarnian quartet scored five wins, two draws and suffered just one defeat.

In the singles, Beere (pictured) salvaged a good draw against England’s Sue Davies after dropping the first set 11-1.

The new Guernsey recruit hit back to win the second 11-4 and with a pairs win in tandem with Matt Le Ber over Israel’s Irit Grechal and Tzvika Hadarm she amassed enough points to stay one clear of Renouf in the overall standings.

However, she needs to finish well today as the top seven in the singles aggregate are separated by just three points.

On the final day schedule Beere and Le Ber play England in the pairs and Beere plays Portugal’s Janeth da Rocha in the individual.

Victory in both matches will assure her of the gold medal.

Alison Merrien beat President Select’s Liz Smerdon in the singles and Le Ber beat a Cypriot, while also losing to Jersey’s Renouf.

Garry Collins had his best day winning the pairs in the morning with Merrien, drawing with Jersey’s Malcolm de Sousa in the singles and beating the Netherlands’ Theo Bellaart.

Entering the last day the Guernsey team sits in third, eight points ahead of Israel in fourth.

Scotland and England with 220 and 210 points respectively, look to be out of reach of the Sarnians, but there are still a possible 48 points to be won by each team, so it’s all to play for.European Championships FrnkGothITC Bk BT 18pt
