Graffiti vandals strike again at church hall

Rev Kevin Northover outside the hallVANDALS have targeted the Vale Church Hall for a second time.

A week after an unknown person cleared off one lot of graffiti, more has been sprayed onto the building.

The hall had been dubbed with the tag RSS and other images in spray paint earlier this month. On Sunday night, the same group targeted the hall again, this time using green paint to spray RSS and symbols onto the side of the building.

‘Within 48 hours of the last time, we noticed that somebody had cleaned it off, which we were going to do ourselves,’ said Vale Church rector the Rev. Kevin Northover.

‘I spoke to the hall caretaker and the committee and nobody knew who cleaned it up for us. We thought it might be the person who had a guilty conscience. But that was a bit of a false hope.’

Mr Northover said the latest incident had happened on Sunday evening as it had not been there earlier in the day. He assumed it was kids and said it would prove costly to clear up.

‘It’s just silly, really,’ he said. ‘It’s not as if people in Guernsey have nothing to do. Because it’s got RSS, it might be somebody’s signature. If anybody knows whose, they should contact the police.’

The church is now looking at installing some type of security to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

‘When I lived in Yorkshire, this sort of thing you accepted as it was happening all the time,’ he said. ‘You just got rather fed up with having to clean up the mess.

‘When I moved here 10 years ago it was something that didn’t really happen. If they are allowed to get away with this, they may decide to do something more and move into wider criminal activity.’

n Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or the police station on 725111.

Obviously time for your medication Conrad!!!
Yes this should be brought to attention of the public, mainly with the hope of someone catching the culprit and making them clean their ‘work’ off the said buildings.

Lets face it, you’d be pretty cheesed off if this was painted on the front of your home and it wasnt brought to the medias attention.

Should this not be the case and your happy for this to continue, may I suggest that you post your address on this forum so thay can spend their spare time working on your house!!!

Donkey, get off your high horse. Conrad was only saying elsewhere in the world its not news worthy, as it happens so regular. I agree with him. It wouldn’t. I do appreciate however on a small island like Guernsey, it will.

Ah, c’mon GsyDonkee, we all know that the culprits are never, ever going to be caught. I’d be surprised if the police even bothered.

Besides, how do you think the culprits will react to the publication of their handiwork? Racked with remorse or jubiliation at their infamy?! Surely graffiti is all about attention, and the press has given them the biggest stage on the island.

I agree with Conrad. Best not to humour the juvenile vandals who did this.

I was a prat as a teenager largely down to the fact my parents were rich and didnt take an interest in what I did.

So halfwit parents (rich or poor) direct your children into sport or something constructive.

GsyDonkee has a point. Conrad is also right, but hopefully was not suggesting that we should turn a blind eye to this sort of thing. No, this would not make the news in the UK because there everyone is resigned to it and no longer even notices these things.

Thankfully, we are not so apathetic about our surroundings and so it is a credit that this sort of thing does make it into the media.

Will the people invloved be caught as a result? Who knows. But if we just ignore the fact that this is happening we will become like the UK. Much better to notice these things so that we are aware of what is happening in our community and can then decide whether anything needs to be done.

    Andy – couldn’t agree more.

The Police should check the phone book for every family with a surname beginning with ‘S’ within a half a mile radius of the damage

It has to be that close as the peabrain wouldn’t be able to find his way home from further afield

It’s unfortunate this has happened but it is just kids trying to become ‘notorious’ on a small island where it is a lot easier to gain notoriety. Especially as it is given such premium space in the Press.

Also, Ray – RSS could mean any number of things, I presume your suggestion to the police is tongue in cheek?

Interesting take on the story Jackie but yes you are right, the early Christians did use grafitti – some of which is still visible in the old catacombs in Rome I believe.

Jackie, somehow I doubt the work of RSS has any lasting religious significance …. although, I am frequently wrong …. in which case, might I be the first to welcome RSS as our new saviour??

    Hi Jackie.
Obviously from the same ward as Conrad!
Seems that you are living the life of someone 2000 odd years ago. Amazingly enough, when I was at school, graffiti was something that was frowned upon!!
I bet the owners of those buildings got annoyed back then as well!
Has something changed in the last 25 years?
If so, by your comments, you support the people/s who think this is great.
I wonder what religion they are?
Like Conrad, perhaps you could also post your address. And, if it’s not a problem to you, maybe you could pop along to the Vale and help clean the walls!!!

What sort of a comment is that Jackie? A rather ill conceived one, if you ask me. Are you saying that drawing silly signs over someone’s property is acceptable now in Guernsey? or do you know the perpetrator perhaps and are covering?
