NERINE H saw that their club avoided a whitewash in the netball ‘Uptons’ at the weekend.
With Nerine A losing out on the Division One title to Covent A and the E side going down 44-24 to St Brelade B in the Division Two clash, it was left to the local Division Three champions to salvage some pride for Guernsey.
And that they did when they won an extremely close and exciting match with Accies C by just two goals at the FB Fields.
‘It was brilliant, we loved it,’ said Nerine H’s goal defence Laurel Garfield about the victory.
‘It was a really close game. We didn’t expect to come through and win.
‘We thought it was going to be one of those days where you lose by just one point.’
It was the Jersey side that took an early lead and this set the tone for the whole game.
Nerine did manage to haul them back to a draw on several occasions and at one point in the second quarter went a single point up.
But Accies finished the third quarter three goals in the lead.
With all to play for in the last quarter, Nerine dug deep.
Thanks to some inspirational defending by Garfield and goalkeeper Caroline Horton and some equally impressive sharp shooting by attackers Danielle Gavet and Kirsty Young, the game was levelled.
Going goal for goal and with two minutes left, Accies stole Nerine’s centre to go two points clear.
This spurred on the Guernsey side and they did not look back.
With 30 seconds left, Nerine took a one-goal lead with their centre pass to come.
This was intercepted by the home side who sent it down to goal, only to have a loose pass intercepted by Garfield.
With the coaches on the side line calling for calm, the ball went straight down to the Nerine circle where a goal was scored and game over.
The final score: 27-25 to Nerine H.Upton day: Caesarean clubs claim Division One and Two titles at FB Fields, third goes to Guernsey
