TOMORROW morning sees round two of the summer karting championship season which is notable for a change in arrangements at the senior end of competition.
This year senior drivers will compete as two separate classes, while racing together.
The KF1 drivers start at the front with a gap of just a few seconds before the Rotax Max drivers set off.
Unfortunately, due to an accident at the Easter hillclimb, Dave Hockaday was unable to compete in the first round, which left only Colin Laine and Ayrton Hockaday in the KF1 karts.
Both drivers entered only heats one and three with Hockaday finishing behind Laine in each.
The final was won by Hockaday after Laine went off on Press Box corner which resulted in his axle moving and the chain coming off.
There have been several new additions to the Rotax Max class.
Chester Dodsworth, 15, has moved up from the Junior Max and was delighted with second place in heats one and two and also a third place in heat three.
Matt Corson, previously a K100 driver, was out in his new Sodi kart and although still getting used to a new chassis and engine took the chequered flag in heat one, third in heat two and second in heat three.
Darren Konken, who last drove in the gearbox class, proved that he can fly around the track in any kart and the Rotax Max was no different. He crossed the finish line first in two heats.
Grid positions for the final were Konken on pole with Corson alongside.
But despite Corson’s best efforts he could not get past Konken and had to settle for second. Mark Ferbrache followed them in third.
There were nine entries in the cadet class where Connor Le Cras led from start to finish in the opening heat, followed by Harry Torpy from Jersey and Cameron Robert in third.
The finishing order for heat two was Angus Torode, Torpy and Brooklyn Brownn who was very pleased to force his way into the top three.
Robert came from second on the grid to take first from Daniel Galpin in the third heat and Robert was on pole for the final where he was overtaken by Torode after two laps, but managed to regain the lead on lap six. Even though he finished third Torpy had the fastest cadet lap time during the day, with a 22.53sec. circuit.
Only two drivers turned out in the Junior Minimax class with Daniel Ridley claiming the honours in heats one, three and also the final. Daniel Alderton was the winner of heat two.
Daniel James, back from university for Easter, was joined by William Konken in the Gearbox class and both were evenly matched.
James took the first heat and, after winning heats two and three, Konken finished ahead of James by a mere two tenths of a second in the final.
A trophy race at the end of the day was won by James.
