THE Herm girls have all been doing their bit for good causes. Last Sunday morning, nine Hermites and several supporters braved a choppy boat ride to attend the Race For Life at Guernsey’s Foote’s Lane.
This year, the women were joined by three of Herm’s younger residents.
For some, it is a regular occasion. Kirsten Parker-George, Lesley Pimblett and Laura Wilson have taken part many times before. Yolandi Moore and Jane Makemson were running for the first time.
Myself and my six-year-old daughter, Eden, took part for the second year in a row. For eight-year-olds Morgan Jones and Maya George it was their first time in the race.
Everyone put a lot of effort into fund-raising, not least the children, who raised £120.
Last month, Maya held a sale in her back garden, selling off unwanted books, toys, videos and some delicious baked goods. It was a good excuse for a clear-out of the things she had outgrown, and the other children were able to buy lots of new things for themselves. During the 20-minute sale, Maya raised an impressive £38.
Morgan, who lives at the Mermaid, held a bake sale one busy Saturday in the pub courtyard. Despite the fact it was a boiling hot afternoon, she and helper Charlie Knight stood behind their stall in the sun for most of the day. Their efforts paid off, however, as everything sold and she raised over £55.
Earlier this month, Eden held a book sale at home after school. About 70 books and videos were on offer, all at rock bottom prices, as well as cakes and cookies. Within 15 minutes, most things were sold and she had raised £27.
The Herm girls had a great time at the event, thanks in part to those who came over to cheer us on. Everyone finished within their target time, and is looking forward to doing it again next year.
Lesley Bailey, who would normally do the Race For Life with us, was in the UK taking part in another event for cancer research. She flew to London to join 15,000 other women in doing the marathon Playtex Moonwalk.
‘It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it,’ said Lesley. ‘It was odd to be walking around London at night. There were lots of people around and a great atmosphere with cars tooting their horns at us.’
Lesley wore a Guernsey flag in her hat and was amazed how many Guernsey women came over to speak to her.
‘I estimated I met at least 15 women from Guernsey, plus I met others while I was training, so there were quite a lot taking part. I would recommend it to anyone. It took a long time but it wasn’t too difficult.’
Lesley completed the 26-mile power walk in seven-and-a-half hours.
