The competition ends today and the island’s team leaders said the week had been a success.

Yesterday, Jersey was leading the medal table, but as results continued to pour in, Portugal was looking likely to overtake them.

Guernsey followed closely behind its fellow Channel Island, with just one fewer silver medal.

Team Guernsey leader Catherine Webster said the dancers were continuing to give their best efforts.

‘Wednesday was the best day for us as we had the most entries,’ she said.

‘We always knew that the ballet classes were going to be the toughest because the other countries, such as Italy, have dancers who are training to be professionals,’ she said.

‘It has been a really successful couple of days and the dancers have been ecstatic.  It’s been a real privilege for them to be here to see the other countries perform.’

Avril Earl, who is also a team leader, said all the leaders were proud of the performances from Team Guernsey.

‘It has been an eye-opener for us and hopefully the children will now be inspired to keep going with their dancing.’

Nine-year-old Claudia Clooney won three gold medals at the competition, including two golds for her solo performances in Song and Dance and Tap, and the other for a group performance.

‘I was really excited to be up there on the podium and I didn’t expect to win,’ she said.

‘I have been training for six months and it has been a really fun week.’

She was also one of four Guernsey competitors asked to perform at the Royal Gala Performance for the World Cup, which is on Sunday.

‘It has been such a good experience,’ she said.

Guernsey is currently bringing home eight gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
