FOOTBALL legend Matt Le Tissier made a guest appearance on the Channel Four show Countdown yesterday.

The former Southampton and England star is to guest star all week in the Dictionary Corner as word and maths pundit on the popular programme.

His appearances will keep up his recent high profile as news continues to be broadcast that he is heavily involved in the takeover of his former club. A decision is likely to be announced later today.

But Saints fans were bracing themselves for a tense week yesterday as it was rumoured there might be further delays.

The club’s administrator admitted he has been speaking to other consortiums because the Pinnacle Group had failed to resolve its dispute with the Football Leagueover its right to appeal next season’s 10-point deduction.

The group held talks with league bosses yesterday in an effort to thrash out a deal they hope will see them buy the club. And the Guernsey legend, who will become chairman if the planned deal goes through, revealed that Pinnacle is now prepared to accept a 10-point penalty in order for the deal to go ahead. The development came after administrator Mark Fry issued a ‘grave’ warning that he might have to start winding up the club by Friday.

Le Tissier, who played for Southampton throughout his illustrious career, said the consortium was still 100% committed to buying the struggling club.

‘We’re very confident that the issues with the Football League can be resolved on Monday [yesterday], even if it means conceding on the right of appeal to the ten-point penalty.

‘I have friends at the football club who have not been paid this month and I want them to know every effort is being made to conclude this as quickly as possible.

‘We hope to finalise the deal by Tuesday [today] at the latest.’

n Le Tissier’s name also generated yesterday’s Countdown’s daily ‘conundrum’, which was ‘sterilise’ – an anagram of Le Tissier.

I fail to see the sense of imposing such a points penalty on an already struggling club. Would that not make things even more difficult for them to recover?
