GUERNSEY is set to stage its biggest ever boxing show next year in front of up to 3,000 people.
The event is set to be on 12 July 2010 at the Track and will feature 18 local boxers from the Amalgamated Boys’ Club pitting themselves against English fighters.
Graham Guilbert (pictured), head coach of the Boys’ Club, is excited at the thought.
‘It has been talked about for years, but it looks like it is finally going to happen’.
The planned show has received significant help from the Belgraves Club committee, who own the venue.
Guilbert said: ‘The Belgraves committee have bent over backwards to help us.
‘Hilary Sarre and Ray Green have been particularly helpful’.
The show is set to feature Guernsey’s first female boxers, one who had her first bout last Thursday and another who Guilbert said is ‘ready to go’.
Big shows have previously been held at St George’s Hall and, in the modern era, at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, but this event looks set to be the biggest yet. Full details will be announced nearer the time.
The opportunity to bring boxing to 3,000 islanders was one jumped at by Hilary Sarre, chairman of Bels, who said: ‘There are still many hurdles to cover and certain bodies need to give approval, but we in the committee have agreed and are very keen.’
Sarre believes that boxing on the island is as good as ever.
‘There are many promising youngsters in Guernsey who are attracting quality opposition.
‘Graham Guilbert has done an excellent job and we believe staging this event would be very interesting to islanders.’ Amalgamated Boys’ Club: July date
