HARD graft from many people has made Guernsey’s success at the Aland Island Games possible according to the Bailiff, Sir Geoffrey Rowland.
‘It has been a tremendous week,’ he said on Wednesday.
Sir Geoffrey and Lady Rowland travelled to the Games with the team.
‘Our competitors have done us proud and that is attributable to a tremendous amount of hard work.
‘But I would also like to congratulate the management team and the administration team who prepared the ground so well to enable our competitors to perform because it is evident that the preparation of many others has been somewhat indifferent.
‘I am sure our competitors are grateful for the preparation that has gone into making life so good for them.
‘But at the end of the day it is down to the competitors and they have done astonishingly well.’
Sir Geoffrey and Lady Rowland leave Aland today to prepare for the royal visit next week.
They have been spectators at as many sports as possible and have been on hand to witness many of Guernsey’s memorable triumphs.
On Wednesday evening, for example, as soon as they had sung Sarnia Cherie and applauded the victorious men’s 4×100m medley swimming team off the podium, they were making their way down route two to see Lee Merrien’s fantastic 5,000m run.
The Bailiff has been impressed by what he has seen in the host island and their organisation of the Games.
‘It has been marvellous. As a spectator, I can see what has been arranged for us and the venues are superb and it is all credit to those in Aland for what they are achieving this week.’
