GUERNSEY Gas wants a public debate on carbon emissions as it hit back in its long-running argument with Guernsey Electricity on the issue.
Guernsey Electricity has said that data released by the States on the island’s emissions showed that a long-running campaign by Guernsey Gas had been misleading.
But Guernsey Gas said the report actually confirmed its position that on-island generation of electricity resulted in about three times higher emissions than using gas.
Its managing director, Paul Garlick, said that if the island was serious about lowering carbon emissions it should import as much electricity as possible and he challenged the States to make that decision.
Mr Garlick (pictured) was keen to highlight that the emissions figures released for electricity did not take account the carbon produced in Europe, where the electricity from the cable link was produced.
‘We are keen that people do not misinterpret this as imported electricity being clean.
‘The European average electricity carbon emissions are approximately twice that of gas,’ said Mr Garlick.
Guernsey Gas would welcome being able to challenge Guernsey Electricity’s position publicly so that it can explain why it believes electricity supplied by the company was a high carbon fuel.
Mr Garlick said his company would be happy to make presentations for any interested groups including schools, businesses, politicians and environmentalists.
It will also show why it believed the States Energy Policy was wrong because increasing electricity demand on island would actually lead to increased carbon dioxide emissions – a position backed by consultants.
Guernsey Gas has asked the States Energy Policy Group and Guernsey Electricity several times in the past to quote a carbon emission figure for on-island electricity – it has, as yet, had no answer.

Instead of arguing, why don’t they look into a long term solution, to limit the amount of pollution emitted.

I am just wandering if Mr Garlick has contacted the suppliers that supply us with electricity about his concerns???
The answer is no cos there is nothing for him to gain from them. Users cant be bullied into a service. They tend to go for the cheapest and best supplier.
Guernsey Gas has got a very limited time life left on this Island. When tidal power is harnessed it will quickly become a dead duck.

There’s a 450,000 year record of Earths temperature-carbon relationship. It’s the same one Al Gore blew up to a 60ft scale yet still managed to get high temp leading to high CO2 the wrong way round, Doh!
It’s the Vostok ice-core record and demonstrates beyond all doubt high CO2 does not effect Earths temperature. It’s 12 year old school kid stuff.
You can also research CO2’s irradiative forcing which demonstrates CO2 levels past 20-40ppm makes no difference. Namely todays 385ppm or tomorrows predicted 500ppm makes no difference to Earths temperature either because CO2 runs out of puff at 20-40ppm.
Climate change is the biggest fraud on the planet. Period. Even a 12 year old can work it out.

The Vostok ice cores demonstrate how close the correlation is between CO2 concentration and climate change. I’m not sure what amateur site you’re basing your faith on, but I note that the “12 year old” thing is repeated on a few blogs.
Anyone that cannot understand that the removal and release of millenia old carbon, sunk there in the process that regulates the chaotic climate systems (as well as other systems) will have an effect on our biosphere needs re-educating, maybe in the infants.
The poison issued by the climate change denial industry, funded by vested interest exploitative business (mining, oil and the like) appeals to human greed, but not to rational intelligence.
This is not a case of supporting the ‘establishment’ and ridiculing mavericks (see Steenis). Climate change scientists have been positively ridiculed for decades. It is only lately that the science has become mainstream as the power of the business lobby wanes in the face of resource shortage and obvious environmental truths.
